Open Breno

FAQ

Short answers to the questions people ask first: what Breno is, cost, privacy, models, formats, sources, export, and what is not there yet.

The basics#

What is Breno?#

An intelligence layer for what an organization knows: it keeps your material with where it came from, answers questions with citations, and lets you take it all with you. See What is Breno.

Is it a chatbot or an AI assistant?#

No. Asking is one way in, but the point is what the system holds, and it is built to refuse rather than guess.

Who is it for?#

Teams that need institutional knowledge to survive turnover, scattered tools and time, and want answers they can check.

Is it finished?#

It is early. The core works end to end, and Known limits lists what does not.

Cost#

What does it cost?#

There is no subscription. You buy coins; reading and searching are free, asking costs 1 coin, and adding a document costs 1 coin a page. A new workspace gets 100 coins. See Billing and coins and pricing.

Is there a free plan?#

A free grant, not a free tier: 100 coins to start, and reading and searching stay free.

Privacy and security#

Who can see my data?#

Only people who pass the read rule: in your workspace, in the right space, cleared for the label, and (for private items) the owner. Other workspaces never can. See How access works.

Does my data leave Breno?#

Only the text a model needs, to the provider configured for the instance, plus optional services you turn on. See Data flow.

Can a model decide what I can see?#

No. Access is decided by rules, never by a model.

Is Breno certified (SOC 2, ISO 27001)?#

No. See Compliance.

How do I delete my data?#

Yourself, in the product: items, your account, or the whole workspace. See Delete your data.

Models#

Which AI models does it use?#

The instance's configured providers for embeddings and answers. You can add your own Claude, ChatGPT or OpenAI-compatible account for answers. See Use your own AI model.

Knowledge#

What can I put in?#

Documents, spreadsheets, slides, images, audio, links, notes, voice, photos and meetings, and the seven connected apps. See Supported files and limits.

Which tools can I connect?#

Slack, Google Drive, Gmail, Notion, GitHub, Jira and Linear bring content in. Over a thousand apps can be connected but do not sync content yet. See Sources.

Can I use it from Claude, ChatGPT or Cursor?#

Yes, over MCP, with a personal token. Adding Breno by URL with OAuth is built but not yet proven against the live services. See Connect AI tools.

What happens to an item when its source changes?#

An edit updates the same item and adds a version; a deletion moves it to trash, for the apps that report deletions.

Taking it with you#

Can I get everything out?#

Yes: Markdown, original files, memory, decisions and graph, with checksums. See Export your knowledge.

Can I bring notes from Obsidian or Notion?#

Yes. See Import knowledge.

Can I run it myself?#

The software ships as containers, but a packaged private deployment is not available yet. See Running Breno yourself.
